Google celebrates its eighth birthday

Google is today celebrating its eighth birthday, signified by using a birthday cake with candles in place of the first 'o' in Google on the company's homepage.

The search engine giant was launched in September 1998, and although it doesn't have an official birthday date it has said that it's celebrating the anniversary today.

Google was founded by Sergey Brin and Larry Paige, then two PhD students at Stanford University, California, as a research project aiming to create a search engine focused on how many times pages had been linked to and the quality of links to ranked sites.

According to Neilsen it has a dominant market share of 54%, with Yahoo! well behind with 23% and MSN further back with 13%.
