Online shopping has surged in the first six months of 2008, growing by 38% over the same period last year.
A report by IMRG CapGemini has found that internet shopping accounted for 17% of every £1 of retail spending this year.
The research company predicted that within five years up to 50% of all retail spending would take place online.
Clothing, footwear and lingerie were among the biggest growth areas with shoppers spending 31% more on clothes in March than in the same month last year.
IMRG CEO James Roper said: "Online shopping growth continues to out-perform the high street, as tight budgets and poor weather keep people at home where they can shop online for bargains".
