Sainsbury's has said its online operation is growing by over 40%, despite its overall sales slowing through the first quarter.

The supermarket giant said that like-for-like sales growth over the first quarter was at 3.4%, down from 4.1% in the previous quarter, with the company admitting that rising food prices had hit growth rates.

But CEO Justin King also said that the web operation continues to grow, despite challenging market conditions.

"The online operation is continuing to perform well, with sales growth at over 40%," he said.

Last month King revealed that Sainsbury's is to increase the number of stores operating online home delivery, from 114 to 200, over the next three years.
