Twitter has stopped sending its members updates via SMS as a result of the costs incurred.

The micro-blogging service has shut down the free SMS updates that users who opted in were previously sent.

Twitter is now negotiating with operators to establish an affordable wholesale SMS deal.

Biz Stone, co-founder of Twitter, said he was determined to offer members a sustainable SMS service. It pains us to take this measure. However, we need to avoid placing undue burden on our service. It makes more sense for us to establish fair billing arrangements with mobile operators than to pass these high fees on to our users, he said.
