Digital radio listening up 22% on last year

The amount of people listening to radio via a digital platform has increased yet again up 22% year-on-year, according to the latest Rajar figures.

The figures, which cover UK radio audience data for Q3 revealed 18.7% of all radio listening is now via a digital platform, compared with 15% in the same quarter last year.

DAB remains the most popular digital platform up 32% year-on-year to 11.3%, compared with 8.6% the previous year, followed by DTV listening at 3.2% and internet listening at 2.2%.

Radio listening via a mobile phone continued to rise with 12.7% of people claiming to have tuned in to radio via a mobile, up from 9.2% the previous year.

Mobile listening was also popular for 15 to 24-year-olds, up 8% to 30.5% year-on-year, with 14.9% tuning in weekly and 3.2% listening everyday.

Digital listening weekly was up year-on-year from 28.4% to 31.4% and now makes up one third of the UK population and digital listening hours also increased by 6m hours per week to 188m hours each week.

Radio listening overall remained stable at just over 45m listeners per week, or 89% of the UK population. More than 45m listeners now tune in weekly, up 221,000 listeners on 2007.
