MGM secures content deal with YouTube

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) is to show full-length films and TV shows on YouTube following a deal struck with the video-sharing site.

The entertainment giant will create at least two dedicated YouTube channels, with TV shows such as old episodes of American Gladiator on one with full-length films including The Magnificent Seven running on another.

The deal is set to be announced formally later today, however reports over the weekend say MGM's decision is part of the studio's drive to boost ad revenues.

Advertising will be served alongside all content, although no details of whether these will include YouTube's new click-to-buy ads, announced last month, have been revealed.

The MGM-YouTube deal mirrors that made by US broadcaster CBS last month to post shows such as Star Trek and Beverly Hills 90210 in full.

YouTube is still in the midst of a $100m (£55.45m) lawsuit with Viacom over its shows appearing on the site.

Last week Viacom-owned MTV made a deal with MySpace to allow advertising to run within content uploaded onto the network (nma.co.uk 3 November).
