Some 24% of consumers watch the BBC iPlayer for at least one hour a week, according to the Olswang Convergence Consumer Survey 2008.

The survey of over 1,100 consumers, conducted in conjunction with YouGov found that this rose to more than 40% for those of the 'tech vanguard' demographic.

The report found 17% of respondents watched other legitimate online TV services, while 9% admitted to watching illegal online TV for at least an hour a week.

The report showed online catch-up TV is increasing in popularity with 6% visiting an online service daily for catch-up content, 54% doing so at least weekly and 81% doing so at least once a month.

John Enser, media, communications and technology partner at Olswang, said, "Our fourth Convergence Consumer Survey shows that iPlayer has been the catalyst to transform online TV from a minority interest into a daily activity, much as iPod and iTunes did for digital music."
