Sainsbury's saw online sales grow by 27% in the last quarter of 2008 in results that saw overall like-for-like sales up by 4.5%, excluding fuel, over the period.

The supermarket giant said its web business had performed strongly in the run up to Christmas, with it recording a record number of orders in the week ahead of 25 December.

Total sales for the company were up by 5.3%, excluding fuel, with customer transactions exceeding 18m a week for the first time.

Sanisbury's CEO Justin King said the company was confident it could build on the results during 2009, despite the global financial concerns.

"The economic environment remains particularly challenging and we expect this to continue in 2009, however our continued investment in price and promotions along with universal appeal and a wide customer base means we are well positioned to continue our good progress," he said.

Sainsbury's results come a day after the first new media age online shopping survey which reported that 22% of people will increase their use of value supermarket sites in 2009 (nma 8 January).
