Several high-profile travel sites crashed yesterday morning as large numbers of commuters checked for information on delays caused by the snow.

South West Trains' and Transport for London's websites were unavailable as they saw heavy site traffic for periods throughout the day. The National Rail site also crashed under the strain of a 600% increase in traffic.

Other affected websites included C2C, which provides rail services for London, Tilbury and Southend, and

London Midland, which serves central England. The website of National Express East Anglia, one of the areas worst hit by the bad weather, was also offline, leaving bus customers unable to check running times.

Today the South West Trains site features an emergency home page displaying updates on all its services and cancelled trains.
