Google takes lion's share of 9.4bn US searches in January

More than 9.4bn search queries were made in the US during January, a leap of 28.5% on last year, according to Nielsen Online.

The research company's January search trends report showed Google had grown the most, with the number of searches via the engine up by 40.8% to 5.9bn during the month, commanding overall market share of 62.8%.

Microsoft had the second highest increase, with queries up by 18.3% to 1.1bn. However, it remained behind Yahoo for market share, at 11.2% to Yahoo's 16.2%.

Yahoo itself saw queries up by 8.7% year on year to 1.5bn, while AOL queries were up by 8.9% to 381m.

Overall market share for AOL was 4%, followed by Ask.com with 1.9%.
