The UK iPhone Mania

Cheery-i, old chap!

Not only do UK users love their iPhones, they are learning to love mobile media, too.

According to the first data to describe iPhone usage in the UK, from comScore, 93% of iPhone owners in the UK accessed mobile media in January 2009.

Comparing iPhone users to smartphone users to mobile phone users, comScore found that the iPhone users did almost everything more on their phones than their counterparts.

Nearly 80% of iPhone users accessed news on their phones, compared with 48% and 20% of smartphone and mobile phone users, respectively. And so on down the line.

"The penetration of e-mail usage on the iPhone is more than double that of the smartphone category as a whole," said Alistair Hill, an analyst at comScore.

iPhone users accessed weather information over twice as much as smartphone users and almost six times more than mobile users.

Why would iPhone users be embracing mobile applications more than other mobile users?

"Consumers are clearly embracing the iPhone's touch screen keyboard," said Mr. Hill. "The UK smartphone market has been dominated by the Nokia 95, which lacks a QWERTY keyboard."

Of course, it is still early days. The iPhone is currently in the hands of only 2% of mobile phone users in the UK.
