Tesco.com sales have increased by 20%, as the supermarket posted record group annual profits of £3.1bn.

The retailer said internet sales rose to £1.9bn, while group sales for the company reached £59.4bn, up 13.5% over the year to 28 February.

Tesco said it offers 12,500 products online and like rival Asda is planning to add clothing to its online offer later this year.

Tesco trialed online clothing sales, including its Florence+Fred brand, in November 2007 but it was axed in March 2008.

Competitor Asda made its George clothing line available online in October last year, as part of the launch of its non-food website Asda Direct (nma.co.uk 7 October 2008).

A Tesco statement read: "We are continuing to see robust growth in customer and order numbers and operationally the business made further progress, with improved product availability, and strong productivity."

The healthy sales report comes after Tesco reported its overall sales growth over the seven weeks to 10 January was its slowest Christmas period this decade (nma 13 January).
