LONDON - Twitter has increased its worldwide traffic to 44.5m unique users in June, up 19% month on month, according to ComScore.

The micro blogging site's users rose from 37.3m in May, a jump of over 7m, according to ComScore figures quoted by TechCrunch.

However the most significant jump in users can be seen when comparing the site's audience from last year.

Its unique users have increased by 1,460% from June 2008, when its worldwide audience was 2.9m.

These estimates only count traffic to Twitter.com and not the traffic to Twitter apps, such as TweetDeck and mobile app Tweetie, which many members use to log into the site.

Twitter still has a long way to go before it surpasses Facebook, which is currently the world's largest social networking site with over 307m users, and MySpace, which has around 125m global users, according to ComScore's April figures.

Nielsen NetRatings research revealed yesterday that adults use Twitter at twice the rate teenagers do. Only 16% of Twitter users are under 25, and a mere 6.6% of teens have a Twitter account
