Google is launching an app store for its real-time communications tool, Wave, which is currently being trialled by a restricted number of users.

The internet giant confirmed plans to roll out the initiative at the Google Wave technology user group meeting held in London.

Developers have already been encouraged to come up with new apps for Google Wave, but making them available via an app store gives an added financial incentive. Google software engineer Lars Resmussen recently revealed  that the internet giant "might do a revenue-sharing arrangement".

Google Wave is what Google came up with when it asked the question: what would email look like if it were designed from scratch today. It allows users to connect with colleagues and collaborate on creating and editing documents in real time.

The news comes as research suggests that the number of apps being developed for Google's mobile operating system, Android, have doubled in the space of a month. Meanwhile Apple has confirmed that 100,000 apps for its iPhone have now been approved.
