Digital music sales up 50% for Christmas week

Music industry association the BPI has claimed a hugely successful Christmas week for the burgeoning digital download market.

According to the group, music download sales were just shy of 3m in Christmas week, more than doubling the tally from the same week last year.

This represents the largest week on record in the UK for the download industry.

The reason for this new peak is largely associated with the popularity of digital music devices and download vouchers as Christmas presents.

The BPI also announced that total music download sales for 2007 topped 77m, a 50% jump on 2006.

BPI communications director Matt Phillips said: "Recent years have seen a boost in download sales in the week after Christmas, but this was a larger increase than expected, and sales should continue to grow throughout 2008."Empty
