It would be a mistake to think of Social Media as the sum of its parts. Sure, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, MySpace and all the rest have created the SoMe revolution, but the changes that ushered in goes beyond social networks themselves.
A new conversation
The revolution has been about how users use the web. There is whole new realm of activity that simple didn't exist before, a network of conversations on all topics known to man, including your brand / business. Conversations that you can be part of.
A new landscape
This is the great change in the marketing landscape. Instead of placing messages encouraging users to listen to you and, maybe, to enter into a dialogue, you can now go out and join in the conversations that users are having between themselves. I don't mean butting in where you are not welcome, but making it easy for users to include you in a conversation because they want you to be there.
Everywhere
This conversation isn't just happening on social networks. They are the main locations, but as this conversation becomes part of your marketing it needs to be reflected everywhere. You can't embrace your fans on Facebook, then blank them on your website.
People expect to engage with you in a new way, not just in a new place.
